The G-Check series are our lighthearted conversations with friends from the industry. Original thinkers who share their passions and views with us. Up next is the host of Hypebeast’s podcast Business of HYPE, the founder of REED ART DEPARTMENT, and a passionate flosser, Jeff Staple.

“Hey! My name is jeffstaple. I live in NYC and LA. I’m a child of the 70s. I’m the founder of the REED ART DEPARTMENT (f.k.a. Staple Design). We work on creative projects ranging from startup brands to Fortune 100 companies. I also founded STAPLE in 1997, the NY-based pioneering streetwear brand with the now infamous “Pigeon” logo. And I also founded experiential lifestyle boutique, REED SPACE in 2002. I’m also the host of HYPEBEAST’s podcast the “Business of HYPE”. And I’m also a prominent teacher on SKILLSHARE. I also frequently moderate, lecture and keynote speak at industry panels & conferences. That’s about it!”

What has been your best 2020 moment so far?
In year that is utterly marred by one shitty thing after another, one bit of silver lining that I’m proud of is that I’ve been able to work on my health. I’m about 25 lbs down from March. Eating right. Learned to love running. And I’m in the best shape of my entire life.

What is your favorite spot in the world and why?
Daikanyama, Japan. The mix of food, shops, design and culture there is perfect. Everyone knows Tokyo is the pinnacle of earth. And everyone has their favorite neighborhoods in Tokyo. But Daikanyama has it all for me.

Who inspires you right now and why?

God…So many people. I could name 100 off the top of my head.
Blu Boy, Robert Glasper, Andre 3000, Lena Waithe, Ronnie Cheng, Anthony Valadez, Hasan Minhaj, Anderson Paak, Ali Wong, The Black Pumas, Akwafina, Kerby Jean Raymond, I could go on and on…All these people have a perfect mix of INSANE DREAMS, BLIND BELIEF, and ACTION.

What new skill would you like to pick up?

I’d love to learn Mandarin.

Favorite recent brand campaign?

On Running Cyclon. The first sneaker subscription. It’s a game changer.

Which artist/creative should we keep an eye on?

Keep an eye on Shirt. (@shirtnyc)

What should we watch?

Nothing. Turn off the TV. Stop Netflix for a minute. Look at the stars. I’m serious.

What should we listen to?
Listen to Sault. And also Lady Wray. (Also give my podcast a listen — #BusinessOfHype — shameless I know)
Describe your favorite off-screen activity.

Sleeping. This is my achilles heel. I do lots of things well. Sleeping isn’t one of them. Need to work on this.

Anything else you would like to share with us?

Not flossing everyday is like not wiping your butt after you drop a deuce. Think about that.
