The G-Check series are our lighthearted conversations with friends from the industry. Original thinkers who share their passions and views with us. Next up is one of the cultural veterans of Amsterdam, a true artist in many ways and a passionate Thai boxing fanatic. Meet Vincent van de Waal.

Who or what inspires you right now?
Strong women and men who are able to fight for their goals/ideals. Face fears and handle to accomplish/change/create. It can go from professional athletes to activists. from artists to teachers. Social workers to friends. I admire people who give up a lot to serve their cause.

What should we watch?

A video work by Arthur Jafa, Love is the Message, the Message is Death. Everything from Werner Herzog. The movie Us directed by Jordan Peele.

What should we listen to?

OWN, music I make with two friends, look it up! I enjoy the whole Griselda movement. Agnes Obel, Late Night Tales. Dean Blunt, Stone Island. Yussef Dayes drums. etc etc. Music is endless.

Best 2020 moment so far.

Performing with OWN in NY beginning of the year. My son his A swimming diploma. Recently, crying in my studio at Het Hem after I finished a work.

What new skill would you like to pick up?

I would like to be a better listener.

Favorite local food spot.
  • Biladi, good simple Maroccan food.
  • Meo’s Colloseum, very good Surinam food only to order or take away.
  • Tyros Libanese Foodkar, best falafel! located at the ten katemarkt.
Favorite off-screen activity.


How do you stimulate creative output?

I try to just go on and on. Keep it alive. Fail, try, fail, discover, surprise yourself. And surround myself with likeminded people, good energy.

My mom. Never start a fight but if you get touched, hit back twice as hard.
